New President of Society of Product Safety Professionals (SPSP) Announced

Don Mays and Laurel Roney unanimously elected by the Board of Directors of the Society of Product Safety Professionals (SPSP) last week as their new President and Vice-President, respectively.

ST. LOUIS, May 8, 2023—The Society of Product Safety Professionals (SPSP), is proud to announce that they have chosen Don Mays as their new President and Laurel Roney as their new Vice-President. The SPSP Board of Directors unanimously elected both—and they graciously accepted both positions.

Don Mays has served as Vice-President of SPSP for two years and has a proven track record in that role. Don is also Founder of Product Safety Insights LLC, a consulting enterprise, and was formerly the Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Samsung Electronics NA. He has served as Managing Director, Product Safety and Quality at Deloitte, Vice President of Retail and Consumer Product Services at Intertek, and Senior Director, Product Safety and Technical Policy at Consumer Reports. Don is also currently Chairman of ASTM’s F15 Committee on Consumer Products and a Board member for Kids In Danger (KID).

Laurel Roney has served SPSP as Assistant Treasurer for two years and has worked in the consumer-goods industry for over twenty years. She has successfully implemented and managed product-compliance programs by leading teams of product-safety professionals, developed and implemented product-safety programs, and built cultures of compliance in entrepreneurial organizations where change is difficult, resources limited, and the business fast moving. She is currently Vice-President of Toy Safety, Compliance and Quality at Spin Master.

While the Board is excited to have Don Mays move from Vice-President to President, it is saddened by the retirement of its out-going President, Ms. Shelia Gottschalk. The Board expresses its heartfelt thanks to Shelia and truly wish her the very best as she starts another journey. Her leadership and guidance at the helm of SPSP will be missed but did leave the organization in great condition for Don and Laurel.

The Board expects SPSP to continue moving forward as it enters a new era under new leadership and through the input and efforts of its members.
